About Me

My name is Mark Schellinger. I have been the head baseball coach at Merrillville High School (MHS) for the past six years.  I have also taught Social Studies at MHS for the past eight years.  I am licensed to teach History, Government, and Economics.  I am a firm believer that these two jobs are closely connected as coaching is teaching in another form.

As the head baseball coach, I am not just teaching baseball skills, but also passing on life skills to all players in the program.  I take great pride in helping student-athletes reach their potential on and off the field. Since 2013, 16 out of 19 baseball seniors attended college upon graduating. Nine went to college to play baseball.  Two others went into the US Army and became a firefighter, respectively.

I graduated from LaPorte High School in 2002, where I was a part of a State Championship winning team (2000).  Upon graduating from high school, I attended Franklin College.  At Franklin, I earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Secondary Education, Social Studies.  I also played football (four years) and baseball (two years.)

As the head coach at MHS, I have focused on building the entire baseball program.  I have also attempted to include young kids in the community by running a kids' camp and also having “Little League Night” during our season.  I enjoy collaborating with other coaches in the athletic department to give our athletes the best chance to succeed in multiple sports.

I am married to my wife, Heidi Schellinger. We have three boys together, Colton, Boyd, and Titus, 3, 1, and 2 months, respectively. I am very family-oriented, which also bleeds into my role as a teacher and a coach.
